Einstein was a strict determinist who believed that for every action there necessarily exists a cause and in line with Spinoza, he maintained “Our actions should be based on the ever-present awareness that human beings in their thinking, feeling and acting are not free but are just ad causally bound as the stars in their motions.”

Late in his life he wrote to a Brooklyn Minister: “The most important human endeavor is the striving for morality in our action. Our inner balance and even our very existence depend on it. Only morality in our action can give beauty and dignity to life.” Einstin was careful to emphasize, however, that “moral conduct does not mean merely a stern command to renounce some of the desired joys of life, but rather a socialable interest in a happier lot for all men.”
