AUTHOR’S PROFILE

Sufi Aasuram (pen name “Aasu”) (1854–1941) was a mystic poet, teacher, and healer from Hala Old, district Hyderabad (now Matiari), Sindh. Known variously as Master Aasumal, Sufi Aasuram, Sant Aasuram, and Aasumal Faqir, he lived a life devoted to truth, love, and spiritual awakening. Spiritually affiliated with the shrine of Sufi Shah Inayat Shaheed of Jhok Sharif, he was the disciple of Sai Noor Muhammad Shah of Tajal Sharif, district Khairpur.

Aasu’s verses flowed in Sindhi, Hindi, Saraiki, Urdu, and Persian, embracing forms such as ghazals, kafis, bhajans, baits, dohas, and rubaiyat. His disciples included Sant Teoon Ram, Dhālu Bhagat, Bhai Parmanand, and Mai Bhoji. 

His major works—Dewan-i-Aasu (completed in 1897 and first printed in 1934–35), Veraag Namo, and Risalo Asumal Sufi—remain treasured in the tradition of Sindhi Sufi literature.

He left this world on 15th of Feberuary 1941 in Hala Old. Presently, his samādhi (darbār) is in Nagpur, India, where the spiritual seat (gaddi nashin) is held by Sai Mukesh Asswani. Sufi Aasuram was blessed with one son, Versi Mal, and two daughters; his descendants now live across India and Sindh, Pakistan.

This book is the second edition of Dewan-i-Aasu, lovingly compiled by Aakash Asswani, the great grandson of Sufi Aasuram. Within these pages are words that caution and awaken, verses that turn the soul towards the Divine, and ghazals that, while clothed in the voice of their time, reveal eternal spiritual truths.

Through his poetry, Sufi Aasuram proclaimed peace, religious harmony, love, and divine passion. His ghazals carry not only spiritual intoxication but also artistic perfection. Even today, his voice resounds as a timeless call to seekers of truth and lovers of the Beloved.
